Corporate Christmas Cards

The Most Expensive Christmas Card Bought

I started this blog back in January with an article on the origins of the first christmas card sent by Sir Henry Cole and designed by J C Horsley.  It comes as no surprise to learn therefore that the record for the most expensive christmas card is indeed also the most famous christmas card.

The card was bought at auction in 2001 at UK auctioneers Henry Aldridge for a world record £22,250.   The seller and successful bidder wish to remain anonymous, but it is believed the new owner is from London.  Sir Henry Cole had 1000 christmas cards produced by JC Horsely back in 1843 but it is understood that only 12 original cards remain.  The auctioneers were rather shocked by the final bid since it was only estimated to sell for between £4000 and £6000.  Two telephone bidders were left when the lot reached £12,000 which boosted the final sale price as they battled to stake a claim of an important piece of history.  Well, important if you like christmas cards like I do !

Here is an image of that first christmas card.
